Biography

*1976 , Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico (lives and works in Tijuana, Mexiko)

Jaime Ruiz Otis is an important protagonist of the Tijuana art scene. Born on the frontier, in his youth he experienced, the transformation from a post- NAFTA world of globalization and of im- and export . Ruiz Otis "found" his art in the industrial waste and recycling dumpsters in the many "maquiladoras" ( assembly plants in northern Mexico and in Central America, the imported parts or semi-finished goods for export) scattered in the border region of Tijuana. Using these discarded materials Jaime Ruiz Otis transformed "waste" into art that focuses on the geographical and cultural importance of the region. He creates minimalist installations, which he himself describes as "primitive", that - with a touch of irony - describe the economic and cultural reality and the unique life on the border. What was once discarded now becomes symbolic, artistic significantly and strikingly nice looking. Ruiz Otis stands as an example of how art is concerned with the impact of the commercial integration of Tijuana by the United States to the city and its impact on the people.
